frequently asked sustainability questions

Q: What type of educational programs do you provide to schools?

A: Through our CE – Clean Energy. Bright Futures.TM program, we provide renewable energy education teacher training and hands-on STEM classroom resources to educators in K-12 schools nationwide.

We do not currently provide educational programs in any of the following areas, but can often refer you to a regional provider: general sustainability education, watershed health and restoration or energy efficiency.

Q: Do you provide community volunteer activities for your partners and/or their stakeholders (tree planting, education, etc.)?

A: No, we do not. However, we can often refer our partners to regional providers (typically other nonprofits) who can offer support in this area.

Q: Are the environmental (or offset) products you sell certified by a third party?

A: Prior to sale by BEF, each Carbon Offset generated is third-party verified to prove that real, permanent, verifiable, additional and enforceable emissions reductions have occurred.

Renewable Energy Certificates sold by BEF are certified by Green-e Energy. Each supplier of Renewable Energy Certificates is required to disclose the quantity, type and geographic source of each certificate, found in the Product Content Label (for web customers, this information is shown when you add this product to your cart; for offline customers this information is presented within your product contract). Green-e Energy also verifies that the Renewable Energy Certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party.

A qualified independent 3rd-party verifier reviews all Water Restoration Certificate® (WRC) flow restoration projects to ensure optimum environmental benefit.

Q: Will I receive any proof of purchase for the environmental (or offset) products I’ve purchased?

A: Yes. If you purchased environmental products from our web store, your certificate(s), which provide proof of your purchase and confirm the exact project supply for each product purchased, will be delivered to you by email within 31 days of your final payment. If you purchased environmental products offline from BEF, your certificate(s) will be delivered to you by email once per year.

Q: Is my purchase of environmental (or offset) products tax deductible?

A: As BEF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your contribution toward environmental (or offset) products, including Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Carbon Offsets and Water Restoration Certificates® (WRCs) may be eligible for a tax deduction. Please consult with your tax advisor if you have further questions about the tax deductibility of your contribution. No goods or services are provided in exchange for a tax-deductible contribution.

Q: Is BEF a grant-making organization?

A: BEF does have a limited amount of funds available for renewable energy generation projects in specific Western regions of the United States. Please contact BEF to see if your project qualifies.

Q: Do you help with energy efficiency?

A: No, we do not. Our focus is helping empower businesses to balance the environmental footprint they can’t avoid, and/or to reduce their footprint through the generation of on-site or community-based renewable energy projects.

However, we are often able to recommend regional partners who do provide support in this area.

Q: How can BEF help my company save money?

A: BEF can assist in determining whether your organization is a good candidate for either on-site or community-based renewable energy projects. If your organization is a good candidate (based on geography, available financial incentives and other factors), then a renewable energy project has the potential to save your organization money.

Implementing energy efficiency is typically the simplest and fastest way to save money. Many organizations that implement efficiency measures use a portion of the savings to procure RECs, Carbon Offsets and/or WRCs to address their unavoidable impact.
