Today, Wood River HS/Comm Campus generated 6 Kilowatt-hours of electricity. From
fossil-fueled sources, this amount of electricity would have emitted 9 lbs of
CO2 into the atmosphere.
This could power:
- An electric toothbrush for 25 weeks
- A 42" plasma-screen television for 12 hours
- A typical video game system for 1 week
Wood River High School was one of five Idaho schools awarded a Solar 4R Schools grant from Idaho Power in 2007. Their 1.1-kW solar electric system is positioned for maximum sun exposure on the southern roofline of the school's community campus building. Although energy generated by the system offsets a portion of the school's electricity bills, its primary focus is education. The solar electric system includes web-based, real-time data monitoring that provides students with a comprehensive learning experience, which is particularly beneficial to students of Wood River's Architectural and Mechanical Design Academy, a two-year program that prepares students for careers in the design field.
