West Salem High School is the second of BEF's Solar 4R Schools projects. Salem Electric, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), West Coast Bank and Northside Electric all contributed toward funding a 2.8 kW utility interactive solar electric system installed on the new West Salem High School. The installation includes a data acquisition package, which gives students, teachers and community members access to download system performance and temperature/solar radiation data. The school opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and the design incorporates many energy efficient and environmentally friendly architectural features.
