Today, Kraxberger Middle School generated 3 Kilowatt-hours of electricity. From fossil-fueled sources, this amount of electricity would have emitted 4 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This could power:

  • An electric toothbrush for 11 weeks
  • A 42" plasma-screen television for 6 hours
  • A typical video game system for 6 days

The 1.1 kW solar panel project at Kraxberger Middle School is the first renewable energy system at the school. Gladstone High School won the solar panels for the school through the Change-A-Light campaign with Energy Trust of Oregon. Teachers at Kraxberger intend to use the data generated from the project for classroom use. Cloudy days, sunny days and temperature changes will affect the energy output of the solar panels. By conducting experiments using these variables and others, students will be able to learn about solar energy in a hands-on environment.
