"Since our children are our future, it is awesome to think that we can condition them now to think about alternative energy sources as a way of life.  Then, as they become adults, they will better understand how their actions affect the world around them.  This is a huge step forward for Kalamazoo public schools."

WSTaR principal

BEF erected a 1.1 kW PV system at the Woodward School for Technology and Research (WSTaR) in April of 2006. The fourth of eight installations to be sponsored by the Vote For Change Renewable Energy Project (Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam, REM, Bonnie Raitt, and the Dave Matthews Band), this project is part of the artists' national effort to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of our energy choices.

WSTaR is fully committed to maximizing the educational potential of this project.  The school plans to publish a newsletter detailing the system's performance, to write an article for the local newspaper, to produce a local cable television show about renewable energy, and to make a short DVD film that describes how a PV system produces electricity.  Most importantly, the PV system will become the centerpiece of WSTaR's Academically Talented (AT) Program currently in development.  Members of the WSTaR faculty have been tasked with creating this new K-6 pilot program for all of the Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS).  Once completed, the AT Program will enhance KPS' existing sustainability and renewable energy curriculum. In order to utilize the AT curriculum to its fullest extent, all other schools in the district will access WSTaR's PV production data in real-time over the Internet.
