The Wilderness Charter School is the third of BEF's Solar 4R Schools projects, and is the kick-off project for our Ashland Renewable Pioneers program. As part of this program (an ongoing partnership with the City of Ashland), current and future revenue generated by the sale of Green Tags will offset the cost of the Wilderness Charter School's photovoltaic project.

The Solar 4R Schools program provides a demonstrable means of educating students on the functions and benefits of solar electric power at no financial cost to the schools. In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, each school’s solar power system includes a curriculum package that uses web-based, real-time data generated by each installation to help teachers instruct students on the benefits of renewable energy.

Twenty-two dedicated students participate in a full-year study of the relationship between people and their local bioregion, community, and resources. This environmental studies program combines living and working in the wilderness, group process, internships, studies of sustainability, and development of the property surrounding the classroom. Through partnerships with Ashland High School, Southern Oregon University, the City of Ashland, and professionals, students earn English, science, health, work experience, and elective credits. Classes include Environmental English, Sustainable Life Science, Wilderness Psychology, and Community Culture.
