In 2002, Salem Electric, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), West Coast Bank and Northside Electric all contributed toward funding a 2.8 kW utility-interactive, solar-electric system on the new West Salem High School—just the second school to join the Solar 4R Schools program.
The Solar 4R Schools program provides a demonstrable means of educating students on the functions and benefits of renewable power at no financial cost to the schools. In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, each school’s solar power system includes a curriculum package that uses web-based, real-time data generated by each installation to help teachers instruct students on the benefits of renewable energy.
In April 2008, West Salem continued its renewable-energy trailblazing with the help of generous funding from Salem Electric, erecting a wind turbine on its campus rated at 1.8kW with a peak output of 2.4kW. To augment the benefit of West Salem’s wind project, BEF has donated data monitoring hardware and provided teachers with additional learning tools that illustrate the benefits of wind energy.
