The City of Vancouver’s Water Resources Education Center has always provided area students and their families with important information about water conservation and protection. Now, with the installation of a solar-electric system and an interactive renewable energy kiosk, the Center is better able to fulfill its more comprehensive environmental mission.
The six-panel solar array, funded through Clark Public Utilities Green Lights program, is the 8th installation in a series of renewable energy demonstration projects managed by BEF. An interactive kiosk supplements the Water Center’s 1-kilowatt solar power system. The kiosk displays a flash-animated presentation, which explains the function of solar electric system components, in order to help students and visitors better understand how solar electricity is generated. The kiosk also provides information on other types of renewable energy technologies, and suggests various ways in which citizens can promote renewable energy in their local community. These educational tools, developed by BEF as part of its Solar 4R Schools program, will help inform the 4,000 school-age students, and to the 50,000 total visitors, that visit the Center each year.
The Water Resources Education Center oversees 50 acres of protected wetlands near its site, and includes one of the few healthy riparian areas in the Portland area that can support feeding, nesting, and resting for the more than 120 species of fish and wildlife sustained by the nearby Columbia River.
