"We set out to prove that these projects provide a benefit to the dairies. We proved that. This project is another important tool for them to manage their waste and to ensure the viability of our local dairies."

Port of Tillamook Bay MEAD project

Port of Tillamook Bay’s Methane Energy and Agricultural Development (MEAD) project is a centralized, dual plug flow digester designed to accommodate manure from 4,000 mature Holstein dairy cattle located on several farms. The project is being developed in two stages, each independently able to process manure from 2,000 cows. The MEAD is unique among energy generating facilities, in that it requires the collection of fuel from multiple, small producers. The project developer is the Port of Tillamook Bay, an Oregon municipal corporation. Electric energy generated by the MEAD project will be sold to the Tillamook PUD. BEF is purchasing 100% of the Green Tags generated by the project.

The former naval air station on which the project is located has historical value with respect to World War II. The MEAD project is located on Dirigible Hangar A. The hanger was destroyed by fire in 1992 leaving a concrete pad as its only remnant. All construction occurs on top of the pad and there is no excavation; hence, the project results in essentially no additional disturbance to existing ecosystems. The adjacent and intact Dirigible Hangar B is a functioning air museum.
