"We have long hoped for the chance to make Maharishi School a leader in the area of energy self-sufficiency. We live in a progressive community where many families have constructed energy-efficient homes. They expect their schools to be leaders in this knowledge. Installing solar panels and initiating a renewable energy curriculum will be stepping-stones on the path to achieving our School’s energy self-sufficiency and educating our students about new technologies. Thanks to this grant from the Vote for Change artists, we can begin."

- Dr. Ashley
Deans, Ph.D.,
School Director,
Maharishi School

"This project indicates that solar can be a driving force in a vibrant local economy. I love driving by the school and seeing this quiet harbinger of an abundant world beyond petroleum. With the success of this project, the thought on everyone's mind is "How can we do more?"

- The Havelka Construction crew: Lawrence A. Gamble, P.E., Brian Robbins, Michael Havelka

The Maharishi School’s 1.1 kW PV system was erected in January of 2006. The second of eight installations to be sponsored by the Vote For Change Renewable Energy Project (Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam, REM, Bonnie Raitt, and the Dave Matthews Band), this project is part of the artists’ national effort to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of our energy choices.

In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, Maharishi’s solar power project includes a curriculum package that uses web-based, real-time data generated by the system to help teachers instruct students on the benefits of renewable energy. Science teachers in grades 7-12 will use the Maharishi system to teach students about the basics of renewable energy.  “Solar Traveler”, a mobile PV demonstration unit supported by Iowa Renewable Energy Association, will also convey the details of the Maharishi School solar project to students of other Iowa schools.
