Juan and Adriana Salazar always dreamed of having a place to call their own. Now, thanks to the good work of Portland Habitat For Humanity, that dream has come true. And, thanks to a unique partnership between Portland General Electric, Energy Trust of Oregon, and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, the Salazar's new roof is outfitted with a solar electric system that will generate more than 1,000 kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable electricity each year. Not only will this system lower the Salazar's monthly energy bill, but it will also demonstrate that solar electric installations can function effectively, even in urban areas of the Pacific Northwest.

The Salazar's Habitat for Humanity home was built with efficiency in mind, and includes superior insulation and high-efficiency appliances. As a result the 1.1 kilowatt solar system will supply nearly 1/3 of the Salazar's annual electricity demand, offsetting about 1,400 pounds of global warming (CO2) in the process.
