BEF and the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) unveiled the 2006 Legacy Adopt-A-School project on July 7th, during ASES' 2006 Solar World Congress.  The 1020-watt solar electric system, donated to Del Pueblo Elementary School, provides a teaching, research, and hands-on demonstration opportunity for a generation of students.  The system is supplemented by a curriculum package, as well as a Web-based monitoring system that provides real-time access to the system's performance data from any Internet-enabled computer.

The ASES Legacy Adopt-A-School program, established in 2001, supports solar installations in cities where ASES holds its annual solar conference. The program provides solar education and solar career development in ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged communities. Del Pueblo Elementary School hosts the sixth ASES Legacy project, and follows similar installations in Washington, DC; Reno, Nevada; Austin, Texas; Portland, Oregon; and Orlando, Florida.

The collaborative effort to install the Del Pueblo system included major funding from BEF.  Other partners that played a pivotal role in this project include Namaste Solar Electric, Inc., a Boulder-based firm that donated the installation labor; Solar Energy International (SEI), a non-profit organization that provided the on-site renewable energy workshop; and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project that supplied curriculum and related teacher training.
