The largest of five Idaho schools awarded a Solar 4R Schools installation in 2007, Capital High School has more than 1,900 students, thereby providing an exceptional opportunity to expose a broad audience to solar power technology.
Idaho Power provided funding for the system through its Green Power program. This voluntary program supported by more than 2,600 residential and business customers develops and promotes clean, renewable energy and represents Idaho Power’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
Although energy generated by the system offsets a portion of the school’s electricity bills, its primary focus is education. Solar 4R School's renewable energy curriculum is included in the school’s environmental science classes. Teachers help students use the system’s data to enhance their understanding of solar power generation. Advanced placement students use the technology to create innovative projects, such as a solar-powered fountain pump for the pond at the school’s front entrance.
Capital High School participates in many outreach activities, including a yearly Solar Day Festival. This popular event showcases the potential uses of solar power and draws families, community members and students of all ages. Solar-powered ovens provide refreshments while solar-powered mini-car races add to the fun.
