"Our goal from the early stages of the Brewery Blocks Development was to have true design-integrated solar in one of our structures. Thanks to the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and our many other partners, we worked through all the obstacles and succeeded. We're very proud to have contributed the first such building - truly the solar landmark we all hoped for - to Portland's downtown."
- Dennis Wilde, Senior Project Manager, Gerding/Edlen Development

Electrical generating solar panels integrated into the building design are the most striking of the many state-of-the art green features on and within a new ten-story office tower located in downtown Portland, Oregon. Gerding/Edlen, the developers of the Brewery Blocks (named for the more than 100 year old Henry Weinhard Brewery formerly located on the property) wanted a state-of-the-art solar system that would enhance aesthetics and produce clean energy. They partnered with BEF and the Energy Trust of Oregon to install one of the largest photovoltaic arrays in the Northwest. More importantly, the partners demonstrated how the attractive black panels could be integrated into the spandrel level (between each level of windows) design in the south façade of Block Four. BEF was able to procure the solar equipment at a preferential price, and will also re-market the Green Tags from the project. All net proceeds from such sales will be reinvested in additional renewable energy projects in Oregon.
An interactive kiosk was installed in the lobby of the Portland Brewery Blocks in August of 2006. Click here to see the flash views from this on-site kiosk.
