BEF erected a 1.1 kW PV system at Barnard Elementary in Washington, D.C. in September of 2006. The 6th of eight installations to be sponsored by the Vote For Change Renewable Energy Project (Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam, REM, Bonnie Raitt, and the Dave Matthews Band), this project is part of the artists’ national effort to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of our energy choices.

Various partners provided the school with additional resources to complement the photovoltaic system.  These partners include:

  • The Maryland-D.C.-Virginia Solar Energy Industries Association (MDV-SEIA) installed the PV system.
  • The National Energy Education Development project (NEED) supplied teacher training and energy education classroom materials for the teachers and students.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy’s EnergySmart Schools provided technical assistance in the design of the new, energy-efficient school.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency donated the tools to benchmark and monitor the school’s energy usage.
