Culbertson Waste Heat Capture Project

Culbertson County, MT

PROJECT DEVELOPER: Ormat Technologies
PROJECT OWNER: Ormat Technologies
START UP DATE: 2009
ESTIMATED REDUCTIONS: 23,248 tonnes CO2e
PROJECT TYPE: Waste Heat Recover
OFFSET STANDARD: Verified Carbon Standard

Located in Roosevelt County, Montana, the Culbertson Waste Heat project is a GHG emission reduction project using waste heat from the exhaust of two natural gas compressor stations. In the absence of this project, the waste heat was dissipating into the atmosphere.

Waste heat capture is a clean energy source, and does not produce carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, mercury, particulates, or any other type of air pollution, as do conventional fossil fuel power sources. The recovered heat energy heats a thermal oil, which is then transferred and used to vaporize a fluid that expands to drive the turbines, which in turn drive a generator. This project produces zero emissions on a net basis and uses zero fuel, as it is entirely powered by a “waste” stream.
