Build A Sustainable Energy Future
With Your Purchase of BEF Carbon Offsets

A carbon footprint is a measure of impact that your day to day activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases they produce. Although there are many things we can do personally to reduce our carbon emissions and the negative impact we have on the environment, each of us in our normal everyday lives still contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change.

The City of Ashland wants to provide our customers the option of promoting future renewable energy development. That's why we are proud to partner with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). BEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to renewable energy development and watershed restoration. BEF sells carbon offsets that represent the environmental benefits of renewable power such as wind and solar. They directly further the development of new renewable energy projects offering one of the most effective ways to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and hydropower. A BEF Carbon Offsets approximately 1,500 pounds of CO2 and supports the production of electricity from clean and sustainable renewable power from solar and wind power projects across North America.

Please join The City of Ashland to help reduce our carbon footprint with your purchase of BEF Carbon Offsets.

Renewable Energy

In 2002, the citizens of Breckenridge developed a Vision Plan to express how they wanted to see their community evolve over the next 20 years. Natural Resources were chosen as one of the most important Town values. Specifically, the community envisioned Breckenridge as a protector of wildlife and its habitat, as a guardian of air and water quality, and as a warden of open space. As a result, everyone from Town Council members to Town employees are concerned about sustainability and global warming issues. In an effort to do our part, the Town has embarked on a strategy to reduce our own energy consumption and carbon footprint, produce on-site renewables where practical, and offset the remaining electricity consumption through the purchase of BEF Carbon Offsets through the non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation. The Town of Breckenridge would like to invite you to join us and take steps to reduce your impact on the environment.

Developing Future Renewable Energy Sources

The Town of Breckenridge is providing customers with the option to promote future renewable energy development. That's why we are proud to partner with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). Green Carbon Footprint

Momentum Greens Your River Expedition

Momentum River Expeditions is partnering with the national non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to offset the carbon emissions emitted while shuttling you to and from your river adventure by purchasing BEF Carbon Offsets. Each BEF Carbon Offset represents 1,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy entering the grid and offsets a minimum of 1200 pounds of CO2—equal to approximately 800 miles flown or 1500 miles driven. BEF Carbon Offsets are certified by the industry standard Green-e® Climate program and meet an independent environmental review endorsed by regional and national environmental organizations including the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

You Green Your Life

We encourage you to take energy efficiency initiatives that will reduce the carbon footprint of your home, travel, event or business. To round out greening your lifestyle, offset the remaining emissions with BEF Carbon Offsets. Your purchase of BEF Carbon Offsets will help ensure that clean, renewable power is generated for the grid. All net revenue is reinvested to serve BEF’s two-fold mission of providing 10 year funding and support to watershed restoration projects and promoting the development of new solar and wind energy projects throughout the country.

Use the Carbon Calculator

CO2 occurs naturally but elevated levels of CO2 are of great concern because they affect the natural balance of our planet’s atmosphere. BEF’s carbon calculator is a tool to help you determine how big your carbon footprint is. Just enter your information about your traveling, heating, and electricity usage and the calculator will tell you how much CO2 is emitted from these activities and how many BEF Carbon Offsets are needed to offset them. Through our partnership with Momentum River Expeditions, we’re offering 20% savings to Momentum customers.

Welcome, Friends of REI
Join REI Adventures in Supporting Clean, Renewable Energy

REI and its adventure travel company REI Adventures have partnered with Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to purchase more than 52,000 BEF Carbon Offsets in the coming year, offsetting more than 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are the largest source of climate-altering greenhouse gas emissions. This level of offsets equates to the annual CO2 emissions of approximately 6,200 average gas-powered cars, more than 2,000 commercial around-the-world airplane flights, or powering nearly 5,000 typical U.S. homes for a year with 100 percent renewable energy.

Match REI's Commitment by Greening Your Own Energy Use

You can reduce global warming pollution by offsetting your own "carbon footprint" - including the energy you use in your home, your car, and your other travel. Use BEF’s carbon calculator to see how your energy use adds up.

Buy now and BEF will send you:

a $20 REI Gift Card for purchases of $120 or more
a $40 REI Gift Card for purchases of $200 or more

Be sure to enter promo code REIADVENTURES when making your purchase.

Give Back to the Places REI Adventures Visits

BEF and REI will also collaborate each year to support a clean, renewable energy future for a local community in a country visited by REI Adventures travelers. Beginning next year BEF will donate 10 percent of its revenue from REI Adventures and all REI customer purchases to annually fund a renewable energy project, including the development of a local infrastructure for ongoing maintenance and support. Each project is expected to bring much-needed electricity to classrooms, health clinics, and other public facilities in developing countries.

REI's Commitment

REI Adventures' carbon-neutral travel commitment is only a part of REI's broader commitment to environmental stewardship. REI has been active in protecting the environment, giving back to communities, and encouraging responsible outdoor recreation for decades. This year, REI earmarked $3 million for outdoor recreation and conservation grants, with an additional $1 million for the preservation and maintenance of community parks. It also converted 20 of its 85 stores to 100 percent green power through renewable energy contracts with local utilities (20 percent of REI's national electricity use), and received LEED-CI Silver® certification for its Pittsburgh store by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Insuring a greener future

BEF Partners with Mainstay Insurance Group, AGPOM

Property owners and managers now have a way to save money while helping to save the planet, thanks to a unique partnership between BEF, Mainstay Insurance Group and AGPOM, the Association of Green Property Owners and Managers. By committing to AGPOM's Green Building Plan, property owners and managers not only reduce their energy use and can reduce their buildings' carbon footprints, they also reduce their insurance premiums. Mainstay Insurance Group has found that green property owners and managers represent less risk to the insurer, said Dusty Rowland, co-founder and president of Mainstay.

"We're helping property owners and managers commit to a corporate sustainability policy and addressing the overlap between going green and the management of business risk." -Dusty Rowland

"By committing to the AGPOM Green Building Plan, our firm was able to increase our insurance coverage while reducing our premiums and business risk. In addition, we expect to realize energy savings through our commitment to the AGPOM Green Building Plan." -Doug Waddell, President of Waddell Properties, Inc.

Discounted rates through this partnership are based on different levels of commitment. AGPOM offers several services to members including a cost-effective Green Building Plan, insurance products through Mainstay Insurance Group that provide premium reductions for committing to the Green Building Plan and Green Premium Plus, a program that purchases RECs for it's members to reduce their buildings carbon footprint.

AGPOM is a nonprofit organization based in Bellevue, Washington and was established in 2009. It aims at rewarding property owners and managers who turn to green practices to help their bottom line. More information about the programs can be found at www.mainstayins.com.
