Going Green Brings Bonneville Environmental Foundation The Gold

BEF, SkiGreen, Clif Bar, Western Washington Utility Campaign Claim National Green Power Leadership Awards

Portland, Ore. (October 23, 2007) Demonstrating that going green is red hot with consumers, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) today announced the receipt of Green Power Leadership Awards for two initiatives: the Clif Bar and SkiGreen partnership and the Western Washington Green Power Campaign. Bestowed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Center for Resource Solutions, these awards were announced during a ceremony held Oct. 22 in Philadelphia to recognize significant advances in developing renewable electricity sources.

"At BEF, we're always looking for ways to develop additional renewable energy resources. We found dedicated, driven people who shared this vision at Clif Bar and with each of the partners in the Western Washington Green Power Campaign," said Patrick Nye, Vice President of Sales for BEF. "By working together to reach communities on a grassroots level, we were able to offer a simple and effective way to fight global warming, one skier and one green power customer at a time."

SkiGreen and Clif Bar
Leveraging the power of Clif Bar's sponsorship, BEF's SkiGreen program earned a "Green Power Pilot" award for its efforts to negate the snow sports industry's environmental impacts. Since launching in 2004, SkiGreen has grown from one participating ski resort to more than 21 today, all of which help increase awareness of global warming's effect on the snow and offer individual skiers and snow boarders the opportunity to support renewable energy for an affordable price-point. A pioneer in greening winter sports, SkiGreen Mini-Tags were the first point-of-purchase Green Tags ever sold. Last season alone, skiers purchased nearly 10,000 SkiGreen Tags, offsetting 1.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Clif Bar furthered the program's success by rewarding skier guests with free Clif Bars for their participation and for paying to "green" ski lifts at many partner resorts, including the Telluride Resort in Colorado, Alta in Utah, and Stevens Pass in Washington.

By bringing attention to global warming's negative effects, SkiGreen offers skiers an easy way to offset carbon emissions caused by driving to and from the resort. SkiGreen ultimately proved that even small contributions make a difference.

Western Washington Green Power Campaign
The Western Washington Green Power Campaign earned a "Green Power Beacon" in recognition of its unique and successful collaboration between diverse parties combining efforts of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation with four regional utilities Puget Sound Energy, Snohomish County Public Utility District, Seattle City Light and Tacoma Power plus the Seattle area television stations of KING 5, KONG 6/16, NWCN (formerly represented by BELO Marketing Solutions), Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters and Dagoba Organic Chocolate. The participants joined forces on an extensive media campaign promoting awareness of green power opportunities throughout the region, encouraging new customers to enroll in utility green power programs.

The campaign included two television spots, Web advertising, utility bill inserts and targeted mailings, offering gift packs and discount offers to new green power customers. Gift packs were provided by Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters and Dagoba Organic Chocolate. The program is still in progress today, and utilities are reporting increases of 12 to 30 percent in customer participation.

About Bonneville Environmental Foundation
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), a Portland, Ore.-based nonprofit organization, was established in 1998 to restore watershed ecosystems and further the development and use of new renewable energy resources. Through revenues generated from the sale of green power products, BEF funds projects that restore damaged watersheds and support new renewable energy projects from solar, wind and biomass. Revenues generated from its sales of Green Tags directly support additional new watershed restoration and renewable energy projects such as the national Solar4RSchools program.
