Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Tampa Bay Rays Bring New Power to Major League Baseball

Sustainability initiatives kick off the season with support for carbon offsets to displace traditional energy with clean wind power

Portland, Ore. – (April 7, 2008) – Fans of the Tampa Bay Rays professional baseball team will get an unexpected bonus this season: wind power. The St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Major League Baseball team and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) www.b-e-f.org, have joined forces to support clean, renewable energy use through the purchase of BEF Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), or Green Tags.

The home opening game against the Seattle Mariners on April 8 kicks off a season that includes six more environmentally-themed home games throughout the season that bring home the message of environmental sustainability and carbon offsets to the masses.

“It’s important to us and to our fans that we are good stewards of the environment, particularly while enjoying an activity as great as our national pastime,” said Brian Auld, Rays senior vice president. “We selected BEF as our partner because it is the only non-profit organization in the country that uses the proceeds of its Green Tags to support new, renewable energy projects. For us, that’s a home run.”

The purchase of 646 BEF Green Tags from clean wind energy will offset:

  • All fan automobile travel to and from the park for the home opener on April 8.
  • All stadium electricity use for six scheduled sustainability-themed home games throughout the season.
  • All Tampa Bay Rays employees automobile commuting in 2008.

The wind energy will offset a total of 484.5 tons of carbon dioxide that otherwise would have been released into the atmosphere to pollute the environment and increase climate change.

“We’re hoping that baseball, apple pie and clean energy become the tradition for families who want to preserve American culture and a clean environment,” said Margie Gardner, CEO of BEF.

In addition, the two organizations will promote sustainability to fans through this baseball season and plan for more joint promotions in 2009. The Rays hope to educate fans about ways to reduce their own carbon footprint this season through energy and water conservation tips and through the purchase of RECS.
