WhiteWave Foods Helps Green The Natural Products Expo West
Purchases Wind Energy to Offset Environmental Impact
BROOMFIELD, Colo. (March 23, 2006) – WhiteWave Foods Company (WWFC), maker of leading organic and natural brands Horizon Organic® and Silk®, announced today that it will purchase enough green tags, or renewable energy credits, from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to offset the environmental impact associated with operating the Anaheim Convention Center during The Natural Products Expo West trade show taking place March 23 – 26.
Expo West, one of the top 100 largest trade shows in the U.S., brings together manufacturers, retailers, buyers and media in the natural, organic and wellness industries. The company decided to purchase green tags to cover the almost 58,000 kilowatt-hours of energy used to power all 256,000 square feet of the Anaheim Convention Center for the duration of Expo West. Green Tags represent the real savings in carbon dioxide and other pollutants that occur when green power replaces burning fossil fuel. With that purchase, WWFC will offset more than 40 tons of climate-altering carbon dioxide emissions—the environmental equivalent of planting more than 10 acres of trees, or keeping the average car off the road for about eight years. Additionally, WWFC already purchases green tags to offset 100 percent of the electrical energy used in manufacturing its Silk and Horizon Organic products.
“Helping reduce the environmental impact of the Natural Products Expo West is part of our commitment to leading the industry in sustainable business practices," said Joe Scalzo, president and CEO of WWFC. "Promoting renewable energy, such as wind power, helps us fulfill our mission of being an environmentally responsible corporate citizen. That's because wind energy not only reduces pollution, it also protects our nation's farmland by creating jobs and economic development opportunities in America's agricultural regions. ” Because traveling has its own set of environmental implications , New Hope Natural Media, the organizers of Expo West, is offering individuals the option of “greening” their travel to and from Anaheim. Attendees can purchase green tags to offset the energy used to travel to the show. Visitors traveling to Expo West by plane fly an average of 4,138 miles round trip, which results in more than 5,600 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the impact of powering the typical U.S. home for about four months. “We are proud and pleased to work with WhiteWave Foods and Bonneville Environmental Foundation to reduce the impact Expo West has on the environment,” said Fred Linder, president of New Hope Natural Media. “By purchasing green tags to offset the energy used at Expo West, WhiteWave Foods and New Hope are making a difference and driving the development of new renewable energy sources. More renewable energy means less air pollution and a more sustainable future for our industry and our planet.” Wind power is an affordable and inexhaustible energy source that does not cause pollution, generate waste, or deplete natural resources. Today, more than 90 percent of the U.S. energy comes from fossil fuels and nuclear power. But the U.S. has some of the highest wind energy potential in the world, with the ability to meet as much as 40 percent of the country's electricity needs.
